Job Description
Interpret blueprints and specifications to determine project requirements and the type of metal to use.
Measure, cut, and shape metal components to specified dimensions (using tools to calculate dimensions and mark cutting lines).

Inspect and finish welded assemblies – checking weld quality, grinding rough edges, and maintaining equipment (torches, welding machines) in good condition..
Salary Data
Welders and fabricators are the backbone of construction, manufacturing, and metalworking industries. The median salary for welders is $48,940 per year, with experienced professionals making $60,000+. The best welders, especially those certified in specialized techniques, can exceed $72,970 annually. Welding is an essential skill across multiple industries, meaning there are endless opportunities to travel, work on large-scale projects, and earn a high income in this rewarding trade.
Salary and job market data sourced from reputable industry sources, including the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), Glassdoor, Payscale, and other trusted labor market research reports. Figures represent estimates and may vary by location, experience, and employer.
Labor Market Growth Projections
The employment of welders is projected to grow 2% from 2023 to 2033, which is slower than average. Welding is heavily tied to manufacturing and construction – while there will be steady replacement demand (about 45,000 openings per year), automation in manufacturing has kept growth modest. However, welders remain essential, especially in infrastructure projects and maintenance of equipment. The good news: over half of all manufactured products involve welding, so skilled welders continue to find opportunities.
Fun Fact
The tallest building in the U.S., One World Trade Center, required over 26,000 tons of structural steel welded together. Welders played a crucial role in constructing the skyscraper, ensuring its strength and durability to withstand extreme conditions.
